SMC (Specialty Merchandise Corporation)

This company has been around for many years and I actually sent for their FREE
information back in 1975 to see if it was possible to make money from their products at
the swap meet. At that time you would receive a FREE imported item along with your
information kit. The kit contained lots of printed material on their products that stated
how much money I would be making on each item and the FREE import product was a
small oval shaped piece of  jade that I guess was supposed to be mounted in a ring.

Even back then, the retail price I was supposed to sell their products for was a
ridiculous amount that nobody would ever pay. Today it seems no different. As an
example they show you a cheap toolkit that they say retails for $69.95 but you only pay
about $25 bucks so you make a huge profit of about $45. Who are they kidding? This
toolkit can be bought at any discount store like WalMart for about $10 bucks.

There is no way you are going to get your average person to pay such ridiculous
prices. This is the first problem with SMC but it gets worse. They have many different
programs to try and scam you out of your money.

One program they try to push on you (pressure you is more like it) is to let them build
you your own website to sell all their crap. Of course they will set everything up for you
and then charge you an outrageous amount so you can start your new business.
Great, now you have lots of people with the same website all selling the same crap. In
their infomercials they imply that you wake up each morning, get your cup of coffee
and then go to your computer and see how much money you made while you were
sleeping.

And now the crown jewel. They use marketing techniques that pressure and confuse
customers into joining these advanced programs with their credit cards that come
complete with "personal business coaches" that will help you hawk their crappy junk.

If you search complaints on the Internet about SMC, many state that once you join one
of these programs you can never get through to these "business coaches" because
they are put on hold for hours.

Also when these customers tried to cancel they could never get through to anyone
that could help them to cancel. Refunds are non-existent.

So lets review.

  • They claim to sell to you crap at  "wholesale prices" that are actually retail or
    above prices.
  • They sell you an overpriced website so you can sell their junk online with
    everyone else.
  • You would have competition with all their other members selling the same crap
    online.
  • They promise a business coach to help you that you can never reach.
  • Your credit card or bank account will be automatically charged each month.
  • You have no chance to cancel because you can't contact anyone.
  • If you try to stop making payments you will become a collection agencies target.

And last, why does Tom Bosley (former Happy Days star) feel the need to lend his
name and reputation to such a scam company. Did he investigate SMC before he
joined as their spokesperson? Did his agent send him over to SMC and say "go make
us some money because you don't have a career anymore?
Update: He has been
working in theatre.

You wind up with all these problems because you saw an infomercial that stated you
could start your own business making thousands of dollars for only a $25 investment.
Wow, what a way to market junk.
