Sweepstakes, Prizes & Lotteries It's illegal for a company to require you to buy something or pay a fee in order to win or claim a prize. It's also illegal for a company to even suggest that your chances will be better if you make a purchase. The company might ask for your bank account information, credit card number or social security number. Some companies will send you an advance check on your "supposed winnings" and will ask you to deposit it into your bank account and take a certain amount of "cash back" to send back to them by money order, Western Union or Moneygram. If you deposit that check you will be responsible when it comes back "bad" and believe me it will. Almost all prize notifications are scams.

Advance Fee Loans, Credit Service & Credit Card Offers NEVER deposit a check you didn't expect to get since you'll be responsible for it if it bounces. It's against the law for telemarketers to charge any fees in advance if they claim that it's likely that they can help you get a loan. It isn't necessary to pay another company to help you get a credit card, nor will it improve your chances of obtaining one. It's illegal to charge for a credit card before you receive it, Federal law requires credit repair services to give you an explanation of your legal rights, a detailed written contract, and three days to cancel (this applies to for-profit services, not to nonprofit organizations, banks and credit unions, or the creditors themselves). You can get a free credit report from the 3 major credit bureaus once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com. To get your FICO score you will have to pay an extra fee. You are under no obligation to pay for any extras that may be offered to you. Immediately dispute anything you know is not correct. There is a FREE FICO score estimator at the bottom of this page.
Government Grants The government doesn't telephone people or send unsolicited letters or email's to offer grants. If someone offers you one, they're trying to steal your money and/or your identity. Legitimate government grants never require fees of any kind. They require an application process initiated only by you, and they're never guaranteed. Government grants are for very specific purposes, like studying whales in Alaska, a minority starting a business or maybe a woman that needs money for an organization to help train women on computers, not just because you're a good citizen. The advertisements on TV or infomercials are major RIPOFFS! They will try to sell you lists, books, or try to get you to attend a seminar to sell you information regarding grants that are already free to apply for. The application process requires you to follow the instructions for a particular grant that is available. You could pay someone to help you to fill out the application correctly if it seems too complicated, but the actual forms are free.
Employment / Business Opportunities Fraud Employment and business opportunity schemes have surfaced wherein bogus foreign-based companies are recruiting citizens in the United States on several employment-search websites for work-at-home employment opportunities. These positions often involve reselling or reshipping merchandise to destinations outside the United States. Prospective employees are required to provide personal information, as well as copies of their identification, such as a driver's license, birth certificate, or social security card. Those employees that are "hired" by these companies are then told that their salary will be paid by check from a United States company reported to be a creditor of the employer. This is done under the pretense that the employer does not have any banking set up in the United States. The amount of the check is significantly more than the employee is owed for salary and expenses, and the employee is instructed to deposit the check into their own account, and then wire the overpayment back to the employer's bank, usually located in Eastern Europe. The checks are later found to be fraudulent, often after the wire transfer has taken place. Never pay a fee to obtain an application or to process an application for employment.
Child / Adult Modeling Sure, there are legitimate ones out there, but they are few and far between. Stay away from any "agency" that recruits by placing an ad in the newspaper or by sending a "scouter" out to the mall. They will try to get you to go to their agency so you can sign up as one of their clients so they can supposedly get you jobs with magazines and maybe TV commercials. If you show up to sign up with the agency, you will be required (or pressured) to purchase a $600 - $1000 photo package. They turn out to be nothing more than a set of mediocre photos that a real agency would turn down. Do your research before handing over ANY money to these so-called agencies. There are very good books at your library that are written by real talent agents that will give you all the advice and information you need should you be interested.
Envelope Stuffing Pay $20 - $50 for them to send you a letter telling you to place the same ad in a newspaper. Now you are the scam artist. This has hooked people for many years and continues today. Read More. Assemble Products / Medical Billing from Home These programs often require you to invest hundreds of dollars in equipment or supplies. When you send in items you assembled, you are told that they are not up to standard and are refused or you can't find clients for your billing service. Now you're stuck with expensive software or equipment. Read More Paid Online Surveys This is very time consuming and usually not worth all the effort you have to put into it. There are many "conditions" you have to meet and if you fail to follow exact instructions you won't get paid a penny. Also, never pay anybody to supply you a list of companies that will pay you to do surveys. Just Google the words PAID ONLINE SURVEYS and you should find many FREE lists to check out like YellowSurveys.com Invention Submission Companies They make you feel like your product is the best invention since the light bulb. They will then charge you money ( $3000 and up ) to send you pretty pictures and a glowing write up of how your idea could hit the big time, and for some more money, they will present your idea to the giants of the industry. You can do it all for free on your own. Check out this free site ipwatchdog.com for more information.
